Summary -Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow come up from the underground city of ember and onto the face of earth. They lead 417 survivors to the face of the earth. They have been living in Ember for 241 years. They look down and see there city miles down in a large hole they came from. No one from Ember have seen earth before.
They get out of the hole and look around and the whole place is empty with no source of life anywhere. They walk for days until they find a deserted city from a distance. They walk up to it to find that there are people living there. A person sees them and tells everyone about the visitors. They call a town meeting as soon as they came into town. The leader of the town says, “Who are you?” They respond by saying, “We are people of Ember and we come to stay, who are you?” “We are the People of Sparks.” At the end of the meeting, The People of Sparks declare that they can stay for six months in their town, but after that they need to go and make their own civilization. They agreed but were upset that they weren’t letting them to stay forever. Then the People of Ember began to settle into City of Sparks.
As tensions start to rise, mysterious acts of vandalism occur against the people of Ember. Then the People of Sparks start to cut back on giving the People of Ember food. The People of Sparks are angry and they want them to leave. The People of Ember are starting to get the memo that they are not wanted.
The People of Sparks have another town meeting. The ask demand that they leave at the end of the month. The People of Ember say that it has only been three months. In the middle of the discussion, the town hall catches on fire. The People of Sparks are desperately trying to put out the fire. Then Lina comes to help them. Doon and the rest of the People of Ember pitch in and help put out the fire. They are successful and Doon pulls out Tick Hassler who has committed all of the vandalism. The People of Ember are allowed to live in the City of Sparks because of their brave act of kindness.
